Environmental Short CourseEnvironment Award cover (small)

The Environmental Short Course has been developed in partnership with Eco-Schools and accredits up to 60 hours of involvement in various environmental activities, whether through Eco-School or other environmental initiatives and projects. The Environmental Short Course comprises the following sections:

  • Environmental Review
  • Raising Awareness
  • Planning and Doing
  • Managing and Monitoring

As a flexible, multi-level award, it provides a stand-alone certificate in Environmental activity, as well as the opportunity for progression to qualifications such as AoPECoPE or Wider Key Skills.

Who is it for?

Young people, mainly aged between 13 and 19, of all abilities in a variety of learning situations - schools, colleges and training centres.

The flexibility of ASDAN's Short Courses means that they can be carried out in a variety of settings, over a time period to suit the individual or co-ordinating centre. Challenge descriptions can be interpreted and adapted according to situation.

How to achieve the Short Course

Students present a portfolio of evidence of their Environmental activities. This portfolio will contain:

  • completed Environmental Short Course book and evidence of challenges completed
  • planning and reviewing documents
  • record of progress
  • summary of achievement, identifying skills development

Certification

After successful internal moderation, centres submit a list of candidates' names via the secure area of this website and certificates are then issued by ASDAN. The portfolios are not submitted for external moderation.

How does this Award fit into the UK qualifications framework?

Credits from the Award can count as up to half the curriculum requirements of the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE), which has GCSE equivalence at Levels 1 and 2, and is worth an AS Level at Level 3. The Short Courses progression routes page has more information on how this works.

ASDAN is also now offering a specific GCSE and AS-equivalent qualification: CoPE Through Environment Managing and Monitoring.

Training

The ASDAN Programmes introductory workshop provides an overview of these awards, as well as information about building a portfolio, moderation and progression. More details, including course dates and online booking, are available in the Training and Events section.
