Key Steps
What is it?
The Key Steps Award is a comprehensive programme of activities in a range of topic areas covering Citizenship, PSHE, Environment Education, Personal Finance Education, Enterprise and Internationalism.
Who is it for?
The activities are aimed at the 10-14 age group and can be used in schools, youth or training centres and alternative education. They are presented in the form of personal challenges and encourage students to develop their personal skills and take responsibility for their own learning.
Structure
Challenges can be selected from any of the nine modules:
- Identity
- Community
- Health
- Citizenship
- Environment
- Personal Finance
- Enterprise
- Values
- international
Students must complete 30-35 hours of challenges to achieve each certificate. The flexibility and range of the Key Steps Award means that it can be followed for up to three years or for less than one year. Students may achieve up to three certificates, although more are available on request.
Evidence of all the personal challenges completed are collated in a portfolio of evidence, along with the Award Book and recording documents (Action Plans, Reviews and Summaries of Skills Achievements).
Assessment
Certificates are awarded by ASDAN following successful internal moderation of students' portfolios and the submission of candidate names via the Secure Area of this website.
Progression
Completion of the Key Steps Award can count as two of the six credits needed to achieve the Bronze Award or two of the 12 credits needed to achieve the Silver/Gold Awards or the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness qualification (CoPE).
There is a clear pathway from Stepping Stones, ASDAN's programme for 7- to 12-year-olds, into Key Steps. The ASDAN credit achieved through Stepping Stones counts towards Key Steps.
