What is New Horizons?

New Horizons is an activity-based curriculum resource which supports the delivery of PSHE, Citizenship and Careers Education. The activities also offer an opportunity to develop communication and numeracy skills in a life skills setting.

Who is it for?

The programme has been developed for learners aged from 7 to 13 who have a special educational need. It is suited for learners working across the P Levels or achieving at lower levels of the National Curriculum than their peers.

Structure

The New Horizons Record Book contains activities within a framework of five modules: Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Relationships. The programme is learner-centred, offering structure and flexibility; it provides recognition for small steps in achievement. In each module there is a focused careers-related activity.

Working with their tutor, the student completes a Personal Skills section for each module they do, which will help them identify specific things they are good at, relating to the module theme.

The final activity in each module is My Challenge. This requires the learner, working with the tutor, to identify something new they would like to try, relating to the theme of the module.

Assessment

Centres have the option of having students' work externally moderated, however this is not a mandatory requirement. Download this guidance document for more information. Alternatively, blank New Horizons certificates can be purchased from the Online Catalogue and awarded at the discretion of the tutor.

With the development of 'P' Level descriptors in curriculum subjects, it is also possible to record the students' achievements by allocating a 'P' Level descriptor to their work, as and when this is appropriate. If a student records an achievement beyond 'P' Level 8, it is permissible to record National Curriculum Level attainment and the subject area.

Progression

For those seeking a qualification outcome within Foundation Learning provision - New Horizons, Transition Challenge, Towards Independence, Workright, and Literacy and Numeracy in Everyday Life can be used support the delivery of the Entry 1 Qualifications in Personal Progress.
