Sex and Relationships Education Short Course
The ASDAN Sex and Relationships Education Short Course has been updated for 2012 with a completely new curriculum. It accredits up to 60 hours of activity aimed at increasing young people's awareness of, and confidence to deal with, issues surrounding relationships, personal skills and sexual health. It comprises six modules:
- Body Knowledge
- Relationships
- Sexual Activity and Behaviour
- Contraception and Sexual Health
- Personal Skills
- Culture and Society
As a flexible, multi-level award, it provides a stand-alone certificate of achievement, as well as the opportunity for progression to qualifications such as AoPE, CoPE or Wider Key Skills.
Who is it for?
Young people, mainly aged between 13 and 19, of all abilities in a variety of learning situations - schools, colleges and training centres.
The flexibility of ASDAN's Short Courses means that they can be carried out in a variety of settings, over a time period to suit the individual or co-ordinating centre. Challenge descriptions can be interpreted and adapted according to situation.
How to achieve the Short Course
Students present a portfolio of evidence of their Sex and Relationships Education studies. This portfolio will contain:
- completed Sex and Relationships Education Short Course book and evidence of challenges completed
- planning and reviewing documents
- record of progress
- summary of achievement, identifying skills development
Certification
After successful internal moderation, centres submit a list of candidates' names via the secure area of this website and certificates are then issued by ASDAN. The portfolios are not submitted for external moderation.
How does this Short Course fit into the UK qualifications framework?
Credits from the Short Course can count as up to half the curriculum requirements of the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE), which has GCSE equivalence at Levels 1 and 2, and is worth an AS Level at Level 3. It also provides the curriculum for the Award of Personal Effectiveness (AoPE) which carries league table points equivalent to half a GCSE. The Short Courses progression routes page has more information on how this works.
Training
The ASDAN Programmes introductory workshop provides an overview of these awards, as well as information about building a portfolio, moderation and progression. More details, including course dates and online booking, are available in the Training and Events section.
