The Youth Challenges and the Youth Achievement Awards were established in 1997 and take an activity-based approach to peer education. They encourage young people to take progressively more responsibility in selecting, planning and leading activities that are based on their interests. Together, ASDAN and UK Youth have used their extensive expertise to create, develop and support this innovative Award programme.

The Awards:

  • recognise and accredit young people's achievements
  • encourage progressive responsibility and ownership of learning
  • provide a mechanism by which to measure the quality of work with young people
  • reinforce good practice
  • encourage participation and social inclusion
  • use peer education

They enable young people to:

  • enhance self-awareness and self-esteem
  • develop communication skills and resolve differences by negotiation
  • get on with and work well with others
  • explore and manage feelings
  • understand and identify with others
  • develop values
  • plan ahead

Youth Challenges and Youth Achievement Awards

The Youth Challenge and Youth Challenge Extra are both 30-hour programmes, while the Youth Achievement Awards progress from Bronze (60 hours) through to Platinum (120 hours) with increasing levels of responsibility.

To achieve the Award, the young person completes the Challenge Booklet and compiles a portfolio with evidence of challenges/activities completed. Certificates are awarded following moderation.

Progression

The Youth Achievement Awards are credit-rated and can lead to other ASDAN qualifications, such as CoPE, AoPE or Wider Key Skills. They can also be mapped into the PSD and Employability qualifications. For more information, download the YAA flowchart.
