The Prince's Trust xl Awards help young people aged 14-16 who are facing difficulties, such as risk of exclusion from school or emotional and behavioural difficulties. To date, the xl scheme has helped almost 60,000 young people. They work on a personal development curriculum comprising six main areas:

  • Personal, interpersonal and team skills
  • Citizenship and community awareness
  • Community-based project
  • Residential activity
  • Entrepreneurship and enterprise
  • Preparation for work/training

Structure and progression

The Award can be achieved at three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold. It is accredited by ASDAN and can lead to qualifications in the Wider Key Skills of Improving own Learning and Performance, Problem Solving and Working with Others.

Prince's Trust xl: Progression to qualifications

ASDAN and the Prince’s Trust are exploring ways in which we can extend the qualification outcomes from the xl programme. ASDAN has always been keen to ensure young people get the very best outcomes available to them from the course, and that schools and centres are offered the most cost-effective accreditation solutions available.

Ofqual has extended approval for the Wider Key Skills until 2013. This means that xl students have a number of accreditation opportunities available to them.

All young people achieving xl Bronze can count the award as half of the curriculum requirements for CoPE, a GCSE-equivalent qualification, at Level 1 or Level 2. Students can also choose to progress to the Silver and Gold xl awards and pursue the Wider Key Skills qualifications.
