Lifestyles Academy for Independence

Lifestyles Academy for Independence is a centre in Herne Bay, Kent for young adults with physical and/or mild learning disabilities. It gives people the opportunity to plan and embark on their journey to independent living as one student, Darren Brazier, aged 27, explains:

"Three years ago, I joined the Lifestyles Academy for Independence. I was introduced to ASDAN and liked the idea of gaining an award to add to my repertoire. My first taste of ASDAN was taking part in a weekly group session where I learnt about all aspects of the environment. I was working on the Towards Independence Environment module.

"We took six months to complete it as we got really involved and went out on several trips, including to Kingsnorth Power Station and Mackenades Farm Shop, which sells Fairtrade and environmentally friendly products. I learnt a lot from this module and thoroughly enjoyed it. After completing it, I went on to the Certificate in Life Skills, and then PSD. So far I have completed two units, Community Action and Personal Safety.

"I am working towards the next unit, Developing Self, where one of my targets was to learn how to use public transport. I am now confident about catching the bus to and from Lifestyles. After completing my chosen units, I shall earn a certificate, which I am really pleased about. Lifestyles recognised my hard work and awarded me Student of the Year. I enjoy ASDAN as it offers a wide range to suit everybody. It also gives me confidence and expands my knowledge and life skills."
