ASDAN in the Cayman Islands

ASDAN programmes have been running in the Cayman Islands since 2003. Nat King and Clive Baker introduced the Bronze Award to the islands' main secondary school, John Gray High School. Nat has helped to take it forward and the first Gold Awards have now been presented. This year the work has expanded to encompass CoPE Level 2 and Career Planning Level 2.
Students access the programmes through their life skills lessons, where they are provided with structured courses on first aid, sex education, drugs awareness, careers and conflict resolution. They supplement this with a wide range of activities, both in and out of the school curriculum.
The Main Awards programme has now been taken up in the alternative education centre and is already proving popular with students and staff. Preparatory Awards have been introduced at the Lighthouse Special School, which is offering Transition Challenge and Workright as the framework for their Key Stage 4 curriculum. Staff have visited the UK and came backed fired up to take the programmes forward.
They are currently exploring the best means to offer Towards Independence and Workright to clients of the Sunrise Adult Training Centre. This will meet a significant need and will provide structure, progression and accreditation for their education programmes.
