What are the ASDAN Awards?

ASDAN Award Programmes offer imaginative ways of developing, recording and certificating a wide range of young people’s personal qualities, abilities and achievements, as well as introducing them to new activities and challenges. All the programmes link to nationally recognised qualifications, which contribute to performance tables.

Who are they for?

Differentiated to offer two levels of Award within the same book, Bronze/Silver can be used:

  • At Key Stage 4 (but also post-16, see also FE Award Level Up)
  • With students in Years 9, 10 and 11, either within the whole school tutorial/PSE programme, or within an option or elective system
  • In special schools as a major part of the curriculum, so tutors can engage students in the development of relevant life skills

Structure

Students select a number of challenges from the 12 modules that make up the Bronze/Silver Award programme:

  • Information Handling
  • The Community
  • Sport and Leisure
  • Home Management
  • The Environment
  • Number Handling
  • Health and Survival
  • World of Work
  • Technology
  • The Wider World
  • Expressive Arts
  • Beliefs and Value

Students gain 1 or 2 credits for each section completed, with each credit representing about 10 hours of activity. Credits can also be acquired from other ASDAN programmes, such as Short Courses or Key Steps.

Six credits (approx. 60 hours) are needed to complete the Bronze Award and 12 credits (approx. 120 hours) are needed to complete the Silver Challenge or Silver Award.

Students are required to plan and review their work at key points and these Action Plans and Reviews form part of the portfolio of evidence, which also documents the completion of challenges undertaken.

Assessment

After students' portfolios have been internally moderated, centres must register candidates names for external moderation at least four weeks in advance of a regional moderation meeting. ASDAN will issue certificates following successful moderation.

Progression routes

The Bronze Award offers progression to the Silver Award (differentiated within the same workbook) and the Certificate in Life Skills Entry Level qualifications.

The Bronze/Silver Awards count as half of the curriculum credits (six) required for ASDAN’s Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE), which carries points in the achievement and attainment tables. Progression to the Wider Key Skills qualifications is also available.
