What is Literacy & Numeracy in Everyday Life?
These activity-based curriculum resources provide a range of life skills contexts to promote the development of functional Literacy and Numeracy skills. They are linked to the pre-Entry curriculum framework for Literacy and Numeracy.
Who is it for?
The resources can be used with learners both pre- and post-16.
What does it involve?
The booklets are each made up of different modules and module activities have been written to focus on three Milestone/P Levels (3, 6 and 8). The resources can be used:
- As an initial assessment tool to gauge the Milestone/P Level learners are working at, providing a formative record
- As an activity-based curriculum resource to develop the learner’s Literacy and/or Numeracy skills, providing formative records of achievement
- To monitor the learner’s Milestone/P Level progress
- To provide evidence of achievement in meeting ILP/IEP targets, providing a summative record of learner achievement
- To provide a basis for planning further targets/personal development
Structure
The resource booklets are made up of nine modules:
- Music
- Food Technology
- Community
- My Centre
- Popular Culture
- Physical
- ICT
- Creativity
- Being Part of a Group
If the learner shows skills in completing activities beyond the stated Milestone, there is a facility within the resource booklets to record this.
While Literacy and Numeracy in Everyday Life can be used as standalone resources, they will also complement the Transition Challenge, Towards Independence and Workright Awards.
Assessment
To celebrate the learner’s achievements, tutors can award an ASDAN Certificate of Achievement for Literacy and/or Numeracy in Everyday Life. These certificates are awarded at the discretion of the tutor. There is
no requirement for external moderation, but it is available on request.
Progression
There are opportunities for progression to Adult Literacy and Numeracy Core Curriculum at Entry level or the Certificate in Life Skills at Entry 1, 2 and 3.

Q: How can my centre start running Literacy and Numeracy in Everyday Life?
A: If you are not yet registered with ASDAN, your first step is to complete an Application for Centre Registration Form.
Current ASDAN centres need to ensure that the Preparatory Awards are added to their centre's registration. To do this, please complete an Additional Networks Registration Form.
Following registration, you will be able to access additional resources and guidance via the secure area of the ASDAN website.
Secure Area for registered centres
Once your centre is registered with ASDAN for the Preparatory Awards, you can access further information and resources via the website's Secure Area.
It contains all relevant updates, essential documents, meeting information and resources and enables you to:
- Download resources, including forms, guidance and checklists
- Register your candidate numbers and names
- Purchase materials from the online ASDAN catalogue
- Check the list of candidates registered from your centre
There is no limit to the number of people from a centre who can register for a Secure Area password. You can register for a password online, by clicking here to access the request form.
