Post 16

ASDAN's courses, which can be delivered in all post-16 institutions, range from supporting students during their post-16 transition year to helping young people develop the skills and knowledge to progress on to higher education, training or work.

Post-16 transition

ASDAN courses provide academic support and skills development for learners undertaking a post-16 transition year.

ASDAN's Accelerating Progress programmes in English and mathematics can be used to support learners in GCSE resits. These courses have been designed to help learners gain a four or five in the new, tougher GCSEs in England. ASDAN credits gained from these courses can be put towards the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness Level 2 qualification.

Our Vocational Taster Short Courses give post-16 transition learners an insight into various employment sectors. We provide courses on:

  • Computing
  • Construction
  • Hair and Beauty
  • Hospitality
  • Land-based Sector
  • Manufacturing
  • Uniformed Services

Vocational Tasters provide accreditation for up to 60 hours of activities and are internally moderated.

Qualifications

Our Level 2 Employability qualification helps students develop vital new skills by covering units including teamwork, overcoming barriers to work, career exploration and enterprise.

ASDAN's Level 3 qualifications carry UCAS points. The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (16 points), Award of Personal Effectiveness (eight points) and Wider Key Skills (six points per skill) help students practise, develop and demonstrate skills that support success in higher education. These include:

  • teamwork
  • self-management
  • problem solving
  • discussion
  • research
  • oral presentation

Over the last 10 years, 34 higher education institutions have joined ASDAN's list of organisations accepting points for CoPE and a further 31 have endorsed CoPE as a qualification helping students develop a broad range of skills.

Careers and work experience

ASDAN's Careers and Experiencing Work Short Course develops learners' employability skills, supports careers information and guidance and helps young people plan and undertake work experience placements. The course can be used to provide evidence for the Gatsby Good Career Guidance benchmarks. We also provide Short Courses in Enterprise and Leadership, which equip young people with skills to thrive in education and work.

Meeting Ofsted requirements

ASDAN's post-16 programmes and qualifications help centres meet many Ofsted requirements, including judgments on the effectiveness of 16-19 study programmes. For example, our courses:

  • develop students' personal, social, employability and independent learning skills
  • help learners achieve high levels of punctuality, attendance and conduct, including through the contribution of non-qualification or enrichment activities and work experience
  • develop self-confidence, self-awareness and understanding of how to be a successful learner
  • promote understanding of how to keep yourself safe from risks such as abuse, sexual exploitation and extremism, including when using the internet and social media
  • develop knowledge of how to keep yourself healthy, both emotionally and physically, including through exercising and healthy eating
