Accelerating Progress: mathematics

What is it?

ASDAN’s innovative Accelerating Progress mathematics course has been designed to support students in the new, tougher mathematics GCSE in England. It has a special focus on helping learners gain a four or a five and approaches the subject in a different way to give learners a fresh perspective. Accessible and engaging challenges will stimulate learners’ interest in the subject and help them experience success. This in turn will boost their performance in the subject as well as enhancing their confidence and motivation.

The programme has been written by a practising mathematics specialist with experience in helping learners make good progress and realise their full potential.

Accelerating Progress has been developed around supporting learners to develop the skills and application required for the problem solving element of questions within the new mathematics GCSE specification. This new problem solving element is something that many students struggle with and they may need extra support and resources to develop this skill.

Who is it for?

The programme has been designed to support learners in Years 10 and 11 in England.

It can also be used to support post-16 students undertaking GCSE resits in mathematics. The course lends itself to the more independent learning undertaken by post-16 students, who can log into the e-platform whenever they want and work through the course at their own time and pace. It encourages learners to take control of their own workload, which is an important skill to develop in education and the workplace.

If desired, these courses can also be used in Years 8 and 9 to explore the more challenging aspects of the specification before starting their GCSEs.

How can it be delivered?

This flexible course can be delivered in a variety of different ways, including during after-school intervention sessions and for students retaking their mathematics GCSE in Years 12 and 13. The 7 ways to embed Accelerating Progress poster gives further details.

One of the many advantages to the course is that it has been designed so that non-specialists, as well as fully qualified teachers, can deliver it. The nature of the course means it can be delivered by a wide variety of staff, which gives schools and colleges more options for delivery.

Course details

Students complete engaging challenges, collect evidence of their work and identify skills development. The challenges in the mathematics programme have a contextual approach, applying subject material to day-to-day events. This reflects the greater emphasis in the mathematics GCSE on applying new skills and knowledge to real-life problems and situations.

By accessing Accelerating Progress through an online platform, where learners view content and upload evidence for their tutor to sign off, the course provides a different way of working for young people. The student works with the tutor to decide on which challenges to complete, giving greater freedom over what they study; this is proven to engage and motivate young people.

Each learner will require their own registration to access the Accelerating Progress e-portfolio system. This allows learners to input their completed challenges and upload their evidence for tutors to sign off online.

A demo of the e-portfolio system is available for centres that wish to view the course content before registering their learners:

The e-portfolio system also includes resources to support learners as they complete their challenges.

Tutor support manual

A tutor support manual is available for the Accelerating Progress mathematics course. This resource has been designed to support experienced practitioners as well as non-specialists in delivering the courses.

The manual includes detailed tutor notes for each challenge and information on mathematics skills development. Print copies of the manuals include an electronic version.
