The learner can:

  • Answer questions that are about a story they are reading/have read e.g. 'Why do you think...?' 'Can you explain why...?'
  • Maintain a conversation with an adult or fellow student where they respond to the other participants' original answer with a further question e.g. 'How are you today?' 'I'm not feeling too well.' 'Oh dear, what is the matter?'
  • Use three means of communication linked to the world of work e.g. telephone, delivering a message, interview, serving a customer
  • Explore a variety of factual and fictional books and give a short appraisal of each, e.g. 'I liked this book because it had lots of facts about Egypt but I think it would be better if it had more pictures.'
  • Answer inferential questions that are asked about a story they are reading/have read e.g. 'Do you think this character is happy?' 'How can you tell?' 'What do you think has made them happy?'
  • Explore, read and understand a variety of packaging signs and interpret the information on them e.g. look at different food packaging and sort foods according to the traffic light classification of fat content
