School inspections to include "personal development" judgement

Published

Ofsted has confirmed that school inspections will in future include judgements on how provision is supporting and encouraging learners' personal development.

Wide-ranging reforms were published by Ofsted this week following an extensive consultation of almost 5,000 teachers, education leaders and parents.

The changes will be introduced from September 2015 and one of the proposals being taken forward is a new "personal development, behaviour and welfare" judgement, which was supported by more than 75% of respondents.

The details of what this will cover are still to be confirmed, although the original consultation question referenced the following key areas:

  • personal, social, moral, cultural and spiritual development
  • keeping healthy
  • self-confidence
  • careers advice
  • employability skills
  • staying safe
  • behaviour
  • attendance

ASDAN courses – such as PSHE, Careers and Experiencing Work, Personal Development Programmes and PSD – provide a curriculum framework for developing and recognising skills and knowledge in these areas. For more information about these programmes and qualifications, contact ASDAN on 0117 941 1126.
