New ASDAN scheme will give learners insight into world of work


ASDAN has launched a new work experience programme to give young people a rewarding and engaging placement.

As part of their programme, learners will undertake the Being at Work module in ASDAN’s Careers and Experiencing Work Short Course.

They also complete an induction before keeping a diary of their experiences, recording information on areas including:

  • The people they have worked with and the support they received
  • The skills and qualities they gained on their placement
  • How the organisation operates
  • The employability skills they have developed
  • Any targets they set and whether these were achieved

During the placement, learners are required to plan activities before reviewing them on completion. This process helps the learner reflect on what they have achieved and what they can improve on.

Oliwia Wiernicka, a Year 10 student from Orchard School Bristol, was the first learner to undertake the new work experience programme.

Over a week, she spent each day in a different department at ASDAN – Finance, Centre Support, Design and Development, Publications and IT.

“I got a wide range of work experience at ASDAN and undertook diverse and engaging tasks. This included learning about invoicing and how to create a teaching resource. I also undertook research on different conference facilities the organisation could use, learned how to send orders efficiently to customers and I improved my ability to identify the components of a PC.

“I particularly enjoyed my time in the Finance department and I am now considering a career in that area. ASDAN staff are friendly and helpful and I very much enjoyed my experience.”

At the end of her placement at ASDAN, Oliwia was presented with a Careers and Experiencing Work Short Course certificate having gained two credits for completing more than 20 hours of activities.

To facilitate the programme, mentors have been appointed at ASDAN to represent each department and they have received training in supervision skills and offering constructive feedback.

ASDAN’s work experience provision is accredited at Gold level by Fair Train, a national charity that champions the benefits of high quality work experience and employability programmes, including traineeships, apprenticeships and internships.
