Get your learners into the festive spirit with ASDAN activities

The ASDAN Christmas card design for this year (see above) showcases our refreshed values and educational principles.

Our values – ethical, diverse, real, collaborative and innovative – are the key beliefs and principles that people within ASDAN, our customers and our partners consider important.

ASDAN’s educational principles underpin our approach to fostering the personal, social and work-related abilities of young learners. Our courses are designed to address barriers to learning by:

  • building belief
  • engaging and motivating learners
  • promoting progress and achievement
  • inspiring creativity
  • releasing young people’s potential

This year, we have produced e-cards, allowing us to be kinder to the environment by reducing paper consumption and postage.

To celebrate Christmas, we have compiled three free resources to help educators add a festive touch to the end of term. You can read more about the resources below and download them for use in your lessons.

Christmas dinner shopping list

Based around challenge 6A1 from the Personal Development Programmes (Bronze, Silver, Gold), this resource asks learners to compare the cost of Christmas dinner essentials from two supermarkets. You can use this resource to develop numeracy skills around a real-life activity. It could also be an opportunity to stimulate discussions about how different religions celebrate Christmas and what the different festive traditions are in each learner’s family.

Helping others at Christmas

Inspired by challenges from the Citizenship and community module from the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) qualification at Levels 1 and 2, this PowerPoint explores ways that we can help others at Christmas. Learners are encouraged to research local projects such as food banks, shoebox appeals, soup kitchens and social events for older people before producing information detailing their findings. They are encouraged to get directly involved in volunteering themselves over the Christmas period, planning their activities and reviewing their work afterwards.

Christmas label templates

These festive label templates are linked to the Towards Independence Craft making module, but could be used to decorate any Christmas kitchen crafts produced by learners (eg jam, chutney, sweets, biscuits, flavoured oils). This might be linked to crafts made and sold at a Christmas fair, given as gifts or sold to raise money for charity. You could use this resource to prompt discussions around giving handmade gifts as an alternative to buying expensive presents.

We really enjoy seeing the work produced by your students, so if your groups are working on any festive activities, please tag us in your social media posts using @ASDANeducation and #ASDANchristmas

If you have any feedback on these resources, please pass on your thoughts our thoughts by email to

From everyone at ASDAN, we hope you and your learners have a relaxing break and we wish you all the best for 2019.
