English and mathematics resources designed to improve progress

Student books are now available to support delivery of ASDAN’s Accelerating Progress courses in English and mathematics.

Designed to boost progression in GCSE English and mathematics in England, Accelerating Progress courses are aimed at enabling learners to gain a four or five and above.

The creation of the student books follows feedback from centres, which said they would like the extra flexibility of print resources for learners in addition to the Accelerating Progress e-platform.

Accelerating Progress courses will also provide support for learners in post-16 education who are retaking GCSE English and mathematics.

Martina Veale, ASDAN Education Director, said: “More than 35 per cent of students did not achieve a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and mathematics in the summer of 2019. This indicates that more support is needed for this so-called ‘forgotten third’ of learners.

“Accelerating Progress was designed to provide a fresh approach to these subjects, motivating learners through engaging challenges. We commissioned highly experienced teachers to create the courses to ensure the content supports progression in the current GCSE specifications.

“Now we are thrilled to be launching new student books for Accelerating Progress, broadening the range of delivery options open to centres. With more than 200 high quality learner resources available, these courses provide a comprehensive solution for students.”

Course details

The Accelerating Progress English programme will challenge students to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills, supporting them to formulate and express their own opinions – one of the key requirements of the GCSE, and an important life skill.

The challenges in the mathematics programme have a contextual approach, applying subject material to everyday events. This reflects the greater emphasis in the mathematics GCSE on applying new skills and knowledge to real-life problems and situations.

Learners undertaking Accelerating Progress courses achieve an ASDAN credit for every 10 hours of activity. Up to six of these credits can be put towards the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness Level 1 and 2 qualification (12 credits required).

Resources and certificates

Tutor support manuals are available for each course and have been designed to assist non-specialists in delivering the programmes. The manuals, available in print and electronic formats, include detailed tutor notes for each challenge, information on subject-specific skills development and practice exam questions. Certificates are available as free downloadable pdfs or as printed foiled certificates.

Interviews with the authors

You can read Q and As with the authors of the Accelerating Progress courses. Tom Walker discusses why there is a need for the English course, while Mike Randall argues that the mathematics course breathes new life into the subject.
