Ensuring a positive return to school through ASDAN's PSHE Short Course

A survey by young people’s mental health charity, Young Minds, in June 2020 found that 74% of teachers and school staff agreed that schools being closed to most students over the period of lockdown has had a negative impact on the mental health of young people.

Fast forward nine months and two further lockdowns, and this experience for a generation of young people in education will be marked in our history. How we recover from this is a challenge for the whole education sector to address.

For 30 years, ASDAN has been developing courses so the talents and abilities of young people in greatest need can be held in high esteem. We set the standard for personal and social effectiveness and have used our expertise to develop more courses to equip young people to make positive transitions into further education, employment or training.

This time, the transition is from home back to the classroom. This is an issue not faced previously by this generation of educators or their learners. We can help.

ASDAN’s PSHE Short Course is one of a number of resources that can have a positive impact on the mental health and wellbeing of your learners as they make the return to the classroom. The course features over 100 challenges across 11 modules, including:

  • show how being connected to others can improve emotional wellbeing
  • explain activities that can promote positive emotional wellbeing
  • demonstrate how to cope with being new
  • show how to develop healthy relationships in different contexts

Knowledge self-assessment grids enable you to monitor the impact before and after each module. As an example, below is the grid from the 'Emotional wellbeing' module in the PSHE Short Course.

PSHE activities also provide an opportunity for learners to develop core skills, such as:

  • problem solving
  • teamwork
  • literacy
  • numeracy

and is relevant to learners across all year groups.

“ASDAN’s PSHE Short Course is a no-brainer – it benefits every student.”
