- Identify tools needed for plaiting such as brushes, bands or thread
- Groom and section the mane or tail appropriately
- Explain why a calm, clean horse is important before plaiting
- Maintain a clean and organised work area
- Create a basic three-strand plait in a mane or tail section
- Secure the plait without pulling hair tightly
- Work from a safe position near the horse’s shoulder or side
- Pause or stop if the horse shows signs of discomfort
