The learner can:
- Explain why regular foot, hoof, or claw care is important for animal health and mobility
- Describe how poor care can lead to health or welfare problems (e.g. lameness, infections, overgrown claws, thrush, or abscesses)
- Identify differences in care needs for at least three animal types (for example: horses and donkeys – hooves; goats and sheep – cloven hooves; rabbits, chickens, or dogs – claws)
- Identify appropriate tools and equipment for care (e.g. hoof pick, rasp, farrier’s tools, clippers, nail trimmers, disinfectant, restraint equipment)
- Demonstrate safe and hygienic use of tools and equipment under supervision
- Assess the condition of an animal’s feet, hooves, or claws and identify when further care or professional attention (such as a farrier or vet) is required
