The learner can:

  • Identify common parasites affecting different animal types (for example: lice, mites, ticks, fleas, blowfly, mange)
  • Describe how parasites affect animal health and welfare (for example: irritation, anaemia, weight loss, secondary infections, stress)
  • Explain how parasite infestations can be prevented through hygiene, housing management, and environmental control


  • Carry out a visual or physical inspection of an animal and its environment for signs of parasites (for example: skin irritation, eggs, droppings, or hair loss)
  • Apply appropriate preventative methods under supervision (for example: topical sprays, powders, natural repellents, grooming, or environmental disinfection)
  • Demonstrate appropriate cleaning, disinfection, and waste management to reduce parasite risk
  • Follow health and safety procedures when handling chemicals or animals
