ASDAN champion Daisy gains independence and confidence for the future

At ASDAN, we’re always proud to celebrate learners who grow in confidence, develop essential life skills and take meaningful steps towards their futures. Through our ASDAN champions initiative, we highlight learners whose journeys show the impact of applied, skills-based learning.

Meet Daisy, our July ASDAN champion

Our latest ASDAN champion is Daisy from E C Roberts Centre, who successfully completed all five of ASDAN's Moving On journals.

The Moving On programme supports learners as they prepare for greater independence, helping them develop practical skills and knowledge for everyday life. Through a series of engaging, skills-based activities, learners explore topics such as budgeting, housing, managing bills, accessing support services and preparing for life in their own home.

For Daisy, the journals played an important role in helping her prepare for a major life transition: moving from supported accommodation into her own council property.

Building confidence for independent living

Daisy enjoyed working through each of the journals and appreciated the variety of topics covered. She said:

"I really enjoyed completing each journal because they were all different. I found them really helpful in preparing me for my move from supported accommodation into my own council property."

Through the programme, Daisy explored a wide range of practical life skills and particularly enjoyed learning about credit, borrowing and different types of lending. The journals helped her build confidence and feel more prepared for living independently.

Learning skills for life

As she progressed through the journals, Daisy developed a greater understanding of budgeting, paying bills, food shopping and preparing to live alone. She also researched organisations, contact numbers and websites that could provide support when needed.

Reflecting on her experience, Daisy said:

"It helped me think about budgeting, bills and food shops and research contact numbers and websites that could support me. The books got me thinking about things whilst completing them but I enjoyed the challenge."

The structured, skills-based approach helped Daisy build on what she already knew while developing new knowledge and confidence to thrive in her new home.

Daisy's journey demonstrates how practical learning can help learners prepare for important life transitions, equipping them with the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to take their next steps successfully.
