ASDAN’s first Champion, Lebron, nominated for his contribution to the local community

At ASDAN, we seek ways of celebrating our learners’ personal steps of achievement. We love nothing more than seeing how our courses support learners to grow in confidence, develop essential skills, and make positive contributions to their communities.

We’re proud to launch ASDAN Champions – a new monthly spotlight on the achievements of learners who have flourished in their ASDAN journey. Each month, we’ll feature a new learner whose story reflects the impact of ASDAN in action.

Meet Lebron, our first ASDAN Champion

We’re delighted to introduce our first ASDAN Champion. Lebron, a sixth form learner at Whitchurch High School in Cardiff is currently completing ASDAN’s Personal Development Programme (PDP).

PDP supports learners to develop personal, social and employability skills through practical and engaging challenges. The programme encourages learners to build confidence, work collaboratively and apply their skills in real-life contexts, both in school and in the wider community.

Since joining the Ty Calon Department in the sixth form, Lebron has integrated successfully and shown strong development across a range of skill areas. His nomination reflects the commitment, enthusiasm and maturity he has demonstrated throughout his PDP journey.

Developing skills through real experiences

Through PDP’s World of Work challenge, Lebron helped to run the local Beulah URC café alongside his classmates. His responsibilities included setting up the café, taking orders, serving food and supporting with cleaning and general housekeeping. He demonstrated strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, and customers were quick to comment on his positive attitude. Over time, his confidence in the role developed significantly.

As part of PDP’s My Community challenge, Lebron worked with other learners to improve the local area by painting a mural in the Whitchurch subway. The project greatly enhanced the appearance of the space, and Lebron showed creativity, cooperation and pride in contributing to his community.

Lebron also visited a local foodbank to deliver donations collected by the school. Carefully labelling and organising items ready for distribution, he demonstrated strong organisational skills and a clear understanding of the foodbank’s importance within the community.

Within school, Lebron has also made a meaningful contribution. For the Communication challenge, he helped organise a breakfast/Eisteddfod event for the school governors. From serving food and arranging decorations to supporting younger pupils with their presentations, he played an important role in ensuring the event’s success.

Lebron’s teacher shared their pride in his achievement:

“We are all very proud of Lebron becoming an ASDAN Champion. He's worked so hard on the assignments in his ASDAN portfolio and he's developed many useful life skills along the way. Lebron is a real credit to Whitchurch High School and we applaud his achievements!”

Lebron’s journey reflects what the ASDAN Champion initiative is all about: recognising learners who embrace opportunities, develop essential life skills and make a positive difference in their school and community.
