Empowering international learners through flexible, skills-based education

ASDAN is delighted to be working with a growing number of international schools to help learners achieve meaningful outcomes through flexible, skills-based education.

Delivered in over 40 countries and territories across the Middle East and North Africa, Asia-Pacific and Europe, ASDAN courses and qualifications (subject to approval) use contextualised, real-world learning approaches to help learners discover and develop their individual strengths and identities, empowering them to take ownership of their learning and shape their futures.

Supporting personalised and inclusive learning

International schools are increasingly looking for flexible approaches that prepare learners for life beyond the classroom. ASDAN courses are designed around the applied plan, do, review teaching and learning approach, encouraging learners to take ownership of their progress through practical, interest-led activities.

Across the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) network, schools are recognising the value of ASDAN’s approach.

At the International School of Geneva, ASDAN supports a broad range of learners through practical, personalised curriculum pathways. Teacher Lesley Berridge explains:

“ASDAN’s programme enables learners to enhance their skills through a wide range of fun and interesting units across a breadth of curriculum subjects. ASDAN is a vital part of our school curriculum and offers a wealth of options and resources to support our students with their achievements in fun and practical ways.”

At the heart of ASDAN’s curriculum are six core skills: learning, communicating, decision making, thinking, team working and self-awareness. Together, these provide educators with a framework to recognise and develop learning that may otherwise go unseen.

Daniel Green, Assistant Head for Pathways and Learning Support at The British International School, highlights the impact ASDAN has had on learners:

“Our students have taken part in creative and meaningful learning opportunities which would not otherwise have been available to them.”

The flexibility of ASDAN courses enables schools to personalise learning pathways, adapt delivery to individual learner needs and recognise progress through portfolio-based assessment. Learners develop practical skills in meaningful, real-world contexts while building confidence through achievement.

Developing skills for education, employment and life

ASDAN offers a range of personal effectiveness and employability-focused qualifications (subject to approval) and courses that support learners to develop transferable skills while completing portfolios of evidence that can be presented to employers and education providers.

The benefits of ASDAN’s project-based curriculum include:

  • choice and autonomy through learner-led project topics

  • transferable skills such as planning, research, evaluation and communication

  • UK-regulated qualifications (subject to approval) with recognised outcomes

  • increased engagement for learners who thrive through contextualised, flexible learning approaches

At Dubai British School, ASDAN’s Towards Independence programme has helped learners with special educational needs engage more meaningfully with learning through practical and creative projects.

Teresa Parker explains how the programme was adapted around one learner’s interests:

“We wanted a flexible programme that could be built around Mia’s interests.”

Mia produced artistic prints that were later displayed in a school exhibition. The experience supported communication, confidence and self-awareness alongside creative development.

“This activity sparked something in her and she was very proud of her work,” says Teresa. “She became more comfortable with people and she was eager to present her work to anyone who was interested.”

Through project-based learning, portfolio assessment and flexible delivery, ASDAN is helping international schools create inclusive learning environments where every learner can develop the skills, confidence and independence needed for life beyond education.
