ASDAN launches new Esports Short Course on Equitas

ASDAN has launched a brand new Esports Short Course, developed in collaboration with James Fraser‑Murison, a leading figure in UK Esports education and co‑author of the world’s first Esports BTEC. The course is now available exclusively through Equitas, ASDAN’s digital learning platform, giving educators a fresh way to engage learners through a format they already know and trust.

The Esports Short Course is designed for learners working at Entry Level 3 to Level 1, offering an accessible introduction to one of the world’s fastest‑growing industries. Esports  organised, competitive multiplayer video gaming  attracts hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide and is projected to be worth £4 billion within the next five years.

A new addition to ASDAN’s skills‑based Short Course suite

The Esports Short Course joins ASDAN’s established range of over 30 Short Courses, including Animal Care, Football and Gardening. Like the rest of the programmes, it uses a challenge‑based structure and portfolio‑based assessment, enabling learners to build and evidence essential skills through practical, interest‑led activities.

Learners explore the Esports sector through challenges such as:

  • setting up and managing Esports teams and tournaments
  • exploring careers and business opportunities in the industry
  • interviewing professional players and industry figures
  • understanding wellbeing, balance and healthy gaming habits

These activities support the development of ASDAN’s six core skills  learning, communicating, decision making, thinking, team working and self‑awareness.

Designed for diverse learners

While Esports courses already exist at further and higher education level, this certificated programme has been created specifically for entry‑level learners, including those in alternative provision and with special educational needs. Its flexible, practical structure supports learners who may not thrive through traditional assessment routes, offering a motivating way to connect learning with their interests.

James Fraser‑Murison said: “Esports is more than just competitive gaming – it’s a gateway to developing essential skills, building confidence and preparing learners for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Delivered through Equitas in a familiar format

The course is delivered through Equitas, ASDAN’s digital learning platform. Educators already using ASDAN Short Courses will recognise the structure, navigation and portfolio‑building tools, making it easy to navigate.

Equitas enables learners to complete challenges, upload evidence and track progress digitally, while giving educators a clear overview of achievement and next steps.

Supporting engagement through interest‑led learning

Melissa Farnham, CEO of ASDAN, said: “We know that when learning connects with young people’s interests, engagement and outcomes improve dramatically. This Esports Short Course allows learners to gain a recognised certificate while building the skills they need to thrive in education, work and life.”
