Skills for success: how ASDAN is tackling the NEET crisis

The figures are stark. In February 2025, the Office for National Statistics reported that 987,000 young people aged 16-24 in the UK are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). Representing a concerning 13.4% of this age group, this is the highest level seen in over a decade and raises critical questions about the support available to them as they transition into adulthood and the world of work.

Some commentators have warned of a potential ‘NEET tsunami’ – a surge in young people disconnected from education and employment, with potentially devastating consequences for individuals and society alike. Research has shown a clear correlation between NEET status and increased risk of involvement with the criminal justice system, suggesting that failing to support adolescents into positive pathways can have long-lasting repercussions, potentially contributing to future prison populations.

For decades, ASDAN has been dedicated to tackling the root causes of disengagement and empowering learners to achieve their full potential. We believe that by equipping them with essential life skills and providing relevant, engaging learning experiences, we can effectively reduce NEET numbers and help young people build brighter futures. Our qualifications and programmes are specifically designed to address the multifaceted challenges they face today, fostering the skills and confidence to succeed in learning, employment and life.

Laying the foundations early

We recognise that developing essential skills is a journey that begins long before secondary school. That’s why we offer Lifeskills Challenge, an online collection of challenges designed for learners working from pre-Entry to Level 3. This flexible programme empowers education providers to create a personalised curriculum, supporting young people with SEND or those facing barriers to learning, helping them develop essential life skills at their own pace.

A flexible way to recognise and reward small steps of achievement, Lifeskills Challenge reinforces practical competencies and metacognitive skills. By engaging learners in communication, collaboration and problem-solving tasks, the programme helps them develop the habits of mindfulness, resilience and motivation they need to progress in life.

CoPE: a proven intervention

The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) is a prime example of our commitment to skills-based learning. Research consistently demonstrates the positive impact of CoPE on academic attainment, learner engagement and personal development.

Multiple studies have shown that CoPE participation correlates with enhanced GCSE English performance, particularly among disadvantaged groups. Students in schools with "wide usage" of CoPE are significantly more likely to achieve A*-C grades in GCSE English and five A*-C GCSEs, including English and mathematics, compared to their peers in non-CoPE schools.

The benefits of CoPE extend beyond academic achievement. Educators and students report that CoPE participation boosts self-esteem, self-efficacy, and attendance. The Plan-Do-Review cycle, a central pedagogical feature of CoPE, fosters reflective learning and self-management, building students' capacity to plan tasks, carry them out effectively and critically evaluate their outcomes.

Skills for today’s employment landscape

We understand that academic qualifications alone are not enough to prepare learners for the complexities of the modern world. Employers are increasingly seeking individuals with strong interpersonal skills, adaptability and a proactive approach to learning. That's why we champion a holistic approach to education that prioritises the development of essential skills.

Our core skills framework has been integral to the ASDAN approach from the outset and underpins everything we do. These recently refreshed set of six core skills – learning, communicating, decision making, thinking, team working, and self awareness – are not just desirable; they are essential for navigating the challenges and opportunities of the 21st -century. By responding to the evolving needs of the UK job market, these skills prepare individuals for lifelong learning and adaptability, creating a workforce ready to meet future challenges.

Beyond statistics: the power of learning

Beyond the statistics is the experience of learning, growing and discovering potential. ASDAN's mission is to provide engaging, relevant and motivating courses, which elevate them to go on to further education, training and work, and empower them to take control of their lives. We believe that every learner deserves the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.

By focusing on skills development, promoting learner engagement and fostering a growth mindset, ASDAN is helping to create a more equitable and inclusive education system. We are proud of our long history in skills development and our proven track record of reducing NEET numbers. We remain committed to working with educators, policymakers and employers to ensure that every young person has the chance to ride the wave and reach their full potential.

Stay tuned for the second part of this blog, where we’ll explore how ASDAN is creating opportunities for individuals within the criminal justice system.
