Unlocking potential through personalised learning: the ASDAN journey

At ASDAN, our mission is to engage learners with diverse needs to achieve meaningful learning outcomes which elevate them to go on to further education, training and work, and empower them to take control of their lives.

Our flexible courses span a wide ability range, from pre-Entry Levels to Level 3, and can be tailored to the learner’s individual needs. ASDAN programmes and qualifications support learners at every stage of their education, meeting them where they are – not where they are expected to be. With regular certification opportunities built into our courses, the ASDAN curriculum encourages learners to take ownership of their learning and their futures.

Personalised progression pathways

We’ve developed twelve example curriculum maps to show how ASDAN courses can support a variety of individual pathways from Key Stage 2 through to Key Stage 5:

For many learners, the ASDAN journey begins in Key Stage 2 with Lifeskills Challenge – our online bank offering over 3,000 practical, adaptable activities designed to develop self-awareness and introduce core skills. Educators can also create and submit their own bespoke activities, which ASDAN accredits, allowing for a truly person-centred curriculum.

Beginning with Working Towards Entry Level 1 and progressing to Entry Level 2, Lifeskills Challenge offers an inclusive foundation for learners to participate, thrive and build confidence.

Flexible learning at every key stage

As learners move into Key Stage 3, they can continue with Lifeskills Challenge or move on to explore ASDAN’s Key Steps programme or Short Courses on 30 subjects, which recognise and award personal steps of achievement through interest-led learning. These courses not only enhance engagement but also help students develop a portfolio - an essential aspect of further study or vocational routes.

At Key Stage 4, ASDAN supports students to take greater ownership of their learning. The Personal Development Programmes (PDP) offer an excellent next step, building confidence and personal qualities through diverse activities that complement the wider curriculum.

For those seeking an accredited qualification, the updated Personal Effectiveness Qualification (PEQ) provides a progressive framework to develop transferable skills valued by employers and further education providers.

A structured, inclusive pathway

Recent improvements to the PEQ include the addition of Entry Level 3, which bridges the gap for learners working just below GCSE level. This change ensures a structured and inclusive progression pathway:

  • Entry Level 3: for learners developing skills just below GCSE level

  • Level 1 and Level 2: aligned with GCSE standards

  • Level 3: equivalent to A-level study

At Level 3, learners can also undertake ASDAN’s Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) - an opportunity to develop independent research skills in preparation for further education. Uniquely, the ASDAN EPQ can be completed as part of work experience, further enhancing autonomy and transition to adulthood.

Unlocking learner potential

ASDAN’s personalised approach to education places agency and autonomy at its heart. By offering a diverse range of courses and flexible pathways, we support all learners in discovering their strengths, building their confidence and making meaningful contributions to their communities.
