What are the Preparing for Adulthood programmes?

These courses have been developed for learners with a range of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). There are four Preparing for Adulthood programmes:

This range of certificated programmes provides a real-life context to reward achievement and foster the personal, social and work-related abilities of all learners.

Who are they for?

  • New Horizons
    Supports the delivery of PSHE, Citizenship and Careers Education and also offers an opportunity to develop communication and numeracy skills in a life skills setting for learners aged 9–13 who have a special educational need.

  • Transition Challenge
    For learners aged 14–16 with SEND and offers two levels:
    Sensory: this programme offers a developmental perspective for learners with PMLD and rewards every step of learning and achievement.
    Introduction and Progression: the activities in this programme cover the statutory programmes of study for the key stage 4 national curriculum, along with activities to develop the skills required for independent living.

  • Towards Independence
    Offers formal recognition for small steps of achievement towards a larger goal. There are more than 80 modules, which can be used separately and accumulated to build a record of personal achievement for learners aged 16+ and adults

  • Workright
    Provides a framework to develop a range of basic transferable employability skills for learners aged 14+ and adults

Progression

For those seeking a qualification outcome: New Horizons, Transition Challenge, Towards Independence and Workright can be used to support the delivery of the Entry 1 qualifications in Personal Progress.
